New luxury carmaker Genesis has proven that it is quite capable of challenging European and Japanese luxury brands and now it’s getting into the premium SUV game with the 2021 Genesis GV80. The GV80 will take on the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class when it goes on sale later in 2020.
Genesis, the luxury division spun off from Hyundai just a couple of years ago, has so far offered a lineup only of sedans. But that’s about to change with the arrival of the 2021 Genesis GV80 midsize luxury SUV.
Genesis’s first SUV will be powered either by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine; rear-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be optional.
The Genesis GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV and will be sold in 5- and 7-seat configurations, the third-row seat offered as an option. Although some had speculated that it would share underpinnings with Hyundai’s recently introduced Palisade and sister division Kia’s Telluride, the Genesis GV80 is built on a rear-drive platform related to the G80 sedan.
